The betel nut, which contains phenolics and alkaloids, has long been used for chewing by the elderly as it is believed to release adrenaline and the feeling of euphoria. Though less so today, the plant has played a big role in Thai tradition and culture. For example: - Areca Catechu leaves are used to decorate tray offerings in ceremonies in which students demonstrate their respect and gratitude for their teachers - From a religious perspective, the Areca Catechu tree is offered as a place for place for roaming spirits to inhabit or possess. The leaf extract is used as an active ingredient in Yen Heal & Hydrate to promote stimulation of collagen syntheisis.
Labisia pumila (Kacip Fatimah) extract
Kacip fatimah is a flowering plant that grows in the tribal area of Malaysia. The leaves are dark green and it thrives in shady places. Our wildcrafted Kacip Fatimah from the peninsula of Malaysia is licensed for harvesting once a year to preserve sustainability, prevent deforestation and protect the minority tribe called the Orang Asli, the indigenous people who live there. Their unique cultural heritage, religion, and belief in nature is inspiring. Medicinally, Southeast Asia has used the leaf extraction as a post-partum medication and an anti-estrogenic deficiency and -immunodeficiency diseases fighter. Kacip Fatima contains a high presence of phyto-estrogen (plant estrogen) especially isoflavones, which can act as an antiaging agent in the skin through the estrogen receptors or through increased production of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and extracellular protein matrix. Also, phytoestrogens can increase the vascularization of skin and prevent the skin from experiencing oxidative stress and apoptosis. Apart from its outstanding plant estrogen, kacip Fatimah also possesses some anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties as well.
The tamarind is a long living medium-growth tree which attains a maximum crown height of 40 to 60 feet. The fruit has been used in Thai culinary for centuries. There are two types of tamarind, sour tamarind, which is used as a replacement for lime or vinegar in a curry or cold salad, and sweet tamarind which is eaten as fruit. High in fiber, Tamarind aids digestion and is used as a laxative in Traditional Thai Medicine. Dubbed “botanical hyaluronic acid” the seed of tamarind contains a high level of xyloglucans, a type of polysaccharide (sugar) with highly effective wound-healing properties that help improve the processes of re-epithelialization and the remodeling of skin cells. Moreover, xyloglucan is considered to be a plant polymer that can create a film thereby forming a protective barrier on the skin to prevent bacterial adherence and moisture loss. It therefore, hydrates, plumps and smoothens the skin and fine lines. It is one of the vital ingredients in our best skin hydrating essence Yen Heal & Hydrate Essence Toner.

Deep in Eastern Asia, the walls within a small bamboo cabin are lined with glass jars containing dry herbs. Each jar labeled with a hand written note of its properties and healing powers.
At some point in ancient times, the knowledge of plants and their synergies was discovered and began to be passed along for generations — I was fortunate to inherit some of that wisdom.
As a child I witnessed how certain plant combinations were synergistic and provided amazing healing capabilities. To me it was magical. As a result, I longed to create a powerful formula to share with you that would capture the carefully cultivated wisdom and power of the indigenous plants.
After a few years of formulating, finally, Yen was born. Yen is a testament to plant synergies and how plants can combine and transform – a completely self-efficient product that promotes a healthy foundation for your skin and creates a portal to reconnect you with your inner values.
